With us today was Gary Fung, the creator of Isohunt. Isohunt is a Toronto based torrenting site that, like Google, searches other sites for more torrenting links, than if they were a singular entitiy.

Interview

A lot of insight regarding the torrenting business, and what the future of downloading holds. Also, we discussed the different things that are happening with legislation and the current laws that surround torrenting.

We spoke to the creator of Pandora Tim Westergren about the Music Genome Project.

Tim had some interesting ideas about current day copyright laws and the effect of royalty fees on the internet radio business.

I liked the interivew, some of his answers surprised me, since they seemed to be a lot less conflicting than I thought they would be.

In a discussion about the role of communism in today's politics, Kaity Chiocca and Konrad Cukla, founders of the Young Communist's League at NYU, highlight the importance of expressing ideas that are portrayed as uncommon in the United States. But they note that many of the communist ideals are not so extreme compared to current social shifts and communism may also be rooted in this country's history.

A particular point of interest toward the end of the conversation was whether socializing health care would cause quality to decline. Kaity disagreed and mentioned how many developed countries have comparable, if not better, health care with socialized systems.

Earshot February 26th

Stern juniors, Danil Subkhankulov and Sagar Vachhani, came in to discuss going into the finance field in the midst of a financial crisis. In fact, Sagar has had a change of heart and is shifting his future plans entirely. Danil, on the other hand is sticking through the turmoil in hopes of a turnaround in the long run.

Earshot Feb. 26th

Both students have reason for their decisions, sometimes rooted in the impression they have from the Stern school, and the debate they spark exemplifies the larger issue of whether the government should step in to aid failing businesses. Hope the discussion sheds some light on the attitudes of those just entering the field.
