Earshot--An Update

So it's been a while since Earshot has posted any episodes up here, and that is my fault. I just took over as producer this summer and it has been a bit crazy getting everything together. I promise that once the new semester starts this will be updated at least weekly if not sooner.

Keep a look out on here for some outtakes of this weeks episode of Earshot with guest Dana Farrrington, a journalism major at NYU, who recently returned from a trip to Guatemala where she interviewed feminist activists and artists.

Aresh Javadi, the Executive Director of More Gardens!, came in to talk to us about a hearing that was taking place in City Hall. On top of this, we spoke about what a community garden is, and their history.

It was a good conversation. Coming into the interview I had a rudimentary idea about what a community garden was, but these seem like neat additions to any community. This might also be the last interview in the "environmental" theme that we have had on the show recently. While it was not explicitly stated, the last couple of shows have focused on different green grassroot organizations in NYC.

This weeks Doppler Effect was about the Green Map System, which shows different sustainable areas that locals of an area can edit and create. We had Mrs. Wendy Brawer, the executive director, come in and talk about it.

I thought that the interview came out great, the different ways that one could contribute and create maps is interesting, and the program itself is a lot more subtle powerful than I thought.

Joined by Tim Newman from the International Labor Rights Forum based in Washington D.C. In light of Cadbury's recent decision to use fair trade chocolate in their Dairy Milk Bar and the Easter holiday, we thought it pertinent to discuss the fair trade movement, chocolate specifically. Although there's still a long way to go for sustainability and labor rights, some companies are fully committed to maintaining high standards for where they get the chocolate used in their products.

With us today was Scott Hed the director of the Sportsman's Alliance for Alaska. Their main mission is trying to stop the construction of Pebble Mine, which is a proposed mine that could potentially destroy the natural resources that the area has.

What I liked about the interview was the portion we spent talking about how the Alaskan's voted. I am constantly surprised by how often people end up being confused at the ballot box, and the serious consequences that this leads to. Discussing the various ways that the corporations skewed the topic also put a bit of a dent in the perceived democracy of the event.

With us today was Gary Fung, the creator of Isohunt. Isohunt is a Toronto based torrenting site that, like Google, searches other sites for more torrenting links, than if they were a singular entitiy.

A lot of insight regarding the torrenting business, and what the future of downloading holds. Also, we discussed the different things that are happening with legislation and the current laws that surround torrenting.

Heya,

We spoke to the creator of Pandora Tim Westergren about the Music Genome Project.

Tim had some interesting ideas about current day copyright laws and the effect of royalty fees on the internet radio business.

I liked the interivew, some of his answers surprised me, since they seemed to be a lot less conflicting than I thought they would be.

In a discussion about the role of communism in today's politics, Kaity Chiocca and Konrad Cukla, founders of the Young Communist's League at NYU, highlight the importance of expressing ideas that are portrayed as uncommon in the United States. But they note that many of the communist ideals are not so extreme compared to current social shifts and communism may also be rooted in this country's history.

A particular point of interest toward the end of the conversation was whether socializing health care would cause quality to decline. Kaity disagreed and mentioned how many developed countries have comparable, if not better, health care with socialized systems.

Stern juniors, Danil Subkhankulov and Sagar Vachhani, came in to discuss going into the finance field in the midst of a financial crisis. In fact, Sagar has had a change of heart and is shifting his future plans entirely. Danil, on the other hand is sticking through the turmoil in hopes of a turnaround in the long run.

Both students have reason for their decisions, sometimes rooted in the impression they have from the Stern school, and the debate they spark exemplifies the larger issue of whether the government should step in to aid failing businesses. Hope the discussion sheds some light on the attitudes of those just entering the field.

Mr. John Spisak came in and we had a conversation about his company Solarover. Which produces Mobile Solar Generators.

Included in the talk was about the burgeoning solar energy business, something which will just keep on growing with a new addendum that is in the stimulus package. We also spoke about where he sees the business going and what new innovations could be coming along.

I liked the interview, there was a lot about solar energy that I was in the dark about (pun intended). I felt as if it was an informative interview. Gave me a bit of confidence for where these things are going.

The most popular Earshot to date. This featured a debate between NYU Local and WSN, the two main sources of inter campus news, on the roles of each journalistic medium.

Fortunately, we were able to delve into the Take Back NYU! protest at Kimmel seeing as both sources covered the situation from start to finish.

Earshot Feb. 19th

While the discussion was fierce, it highlighted the idea that newspaper and online journalism may both serve unique and important functions. As for covering the sit-in at Kimmel, NYU Local provided more of a play-by-play and WSN took a step back to assess the situation from a few more angles. Which better served the readers? Check it out and decide for yourself.

Hack This site's system administrator comes in to talk about Hack this site, and the general perception of hacking in current day thought.

I really enjoyed the interview, I thought that a lot of the answers were somewhat surprising. The one that I was most surprised with was the response to "famous" hackers and why they are in fact a deterrent, in Kage's opinion.

Jonah Birch and Rene Rojas from the Radical Film and Lecture Series come in to discuss recent attacks in Gaza. They give a historical context and the role the United States has played in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Earshot Feb. 12th

Only toward the end did debates arise and it would have been great to foster the discussion further. This topic could have gone on for hours, as I'm sure it has, but we had to condense the years of conflict into a mere half hour.

It's a lot to think about, but have at it!

Geologist Daniel Dzurisin from the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory comes in to talk about the supervolcano underneath Yellowstone.

The interview spans a lot of different topics, ranging from a simple explanation of what a volcano is, what makes something a "super volcano," and ramifications of an explosion.
